Milestone Establishes AlixaRx as an Industry Leader for Automated, On-site Medication Dispensing in Post-acute Care

PLANO, Texas, October 24, 2013 – AlixaRx, a national pharmacy that specializes in innovative technology to enhance patient care, is now successfully servicing over 100 post-acute care facilities with its revolutionary on-site medication dispensing systems. This milestone establishes AlixaRx as an industry leader for delivering fully automated, on-site medication dispensing systems to post-acute care facilities across the nation. In less than one year, AlixaRx has dispensed more than 6 million doses to over 20,000 patients from its on-site dispensing systems, an accomplishment that no other post-acute care pharmacy can claim.

“AlixaRx is committed to improving the quality of care in the post-acute setting by completely changing the way medications are managed and delivered to our patients,” said Brad Savage, Senior Vice President, AlixaRx. “For too long, our industry has struggled with the medication delivery systems used in post-acute health care settings. While many smaller, regional pharmacies have embraced technology to improve patient care, the national pharmacies have been reluctant to change because of their large infrastructure investment to support the traditional punch-card dispensing model.”

AlixaRx is the first post-acute care pharmacy with a national footprint capable of offering postacute care providers an on-site medication dispensing and management system that gives clinicians access to more than 300 of the facility’s most commonly prescribed medications. The individually sealed, patient-specific packaging reduces medication errors and frees up nursing time to provide more direct patient care and monitoring. By dispensing only the medications needed for that day, an average of 40 fewer tablets and capsules per patient are dispensed each month – dramatically reducing drug costs for the facility.

The on-site dispensing system, combined with AlixaRx’s board-certified geriatric-specialty pharmacist, has already proven to dramatically improve patient care, while reducing costs. By example, Golden LivingCenter – Indianapolis has seen a 15 percent reduction in the use of antipsychotic drugs, a 32 percent reduction in high-risk medication use, and a 10 percent cost savings. The 101-bed skilled nursing facility received the Gold Innovator of the Year Award from McKnight’s Excellence in Technology Award program because of this technology. McKnight’s Long-Term Care News is a business magazine that reports on the events affecting the way care is delivered across the entire long-term-care spectrum.
